Equinox Talks – Garry Deverell & Mary Crooks

On Sunday September 17 2023 Garry Deverell and Mary Crooks spoke on: ‘A voice from the heart ~ contemplation and compassion on country’. Garry, a trawloolway man and academic dean in the School of Indigenous Studies, University of Divinity, talked about how a Voice for indigenous people is also a voice for Country. Mary, Executive Director of the Victorian Women’s Trust and Director of ‘Yes, Together’ , talked about the principles and hopes of the Yes campaign.

‘… A voice for us, however conceived, is also a Voice for country. We are her voice, the voice of our mother earth. An invitation to say ‘Yes’ to the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is also, therefore, an opportunity to say ‘yes’ to country and to exercise a commensurate compassion for country.  If you hear that voice at all, even faintly as a whispering in the trees or in your hearts, I beg you to take is seriously. To listen, to learn, and to act for our common future in this communion of being to which we all belong, whether we are aware of it or not..’

Garry was also in conversation with Mary Crooks AO, Executive Director of the Victorian Women’s Trust and Project Director of ‘Together, Yes’, a campaign to bring the referendum home. Mary spoke about the principles of the campaign.
